While thyroid disorders are becoming more widely recoginised reverse T3 dominance is often overlooked.
Reverse T3 dominance, sometimes referred to as Wilson's Syndrome is a low thyroid disorder. This condition is due to high circulating levels of 'reverse T3' (rT3), the thyroid hormone which slows down metabolism.
Understanding Reverse T3
Triiodothyronine (T3) is the active thyroid hormone and every cell in the body has a molecular docking station for T3. Normally thyroxine (T4) converts to active T3 and the body functions well. However when you have reverse T3 dominance T4 is no longer converting to T3 but is being shunted towards the production of inactive reverse T3.Reverse T3 has the same molecular structure as T3 however it is a mirror image of T3 and therefore fits into the receptor upside down. This prevents the active T3 from binding to the receptor site and activating the appropriate thyroid response.
Reverse T3 slows metabolism, causing weight gain. It also causes the typical signs & symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Reverse T3 problems are often difficult to diagnose as the typical low thyroid symptoms exist, but standard thyroid tests appear to be within normal limits. It may even be misdiagnosed as depression, muscle pain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or simply dismissed as fatigue.
